2004 is the Transit of Venus
From April 2004 Astley Hall will be hosting a season long exhibition about Jeremiah Horrocks and his discovery of the Transit of Venus in 1639. We will be staging an exciting programme of events throughout the year, in conjunction with Carr House in Bretherton where Horrocks made his discovery. Horrocks first observed the transit of Venus in 1639 from Carr House in Bretherton. This is your only chance to see the transit in this country. Astley Hall will be working in partnership with the Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory in Preston, Liverpool University, Much Hoole Church and many other interested parties.
Funding for conservation work sought Astley Hall will be applying for a Woodmansterne Conservation Award for a huge painting, which is currently rolled up in store. The oil painting is of the Anderton Family of Euxton and we are guessing is by either James Northcote 1746 - 1831, David Allan 1744 - 1796 or Arthur William Devis. We have had conservators look at the painting and we hope that once funding has been secured and the painting is cleaned and restored we may be closer to identifying the artist. The painting will hopefully be hung in the Great Hall and have a full range of educational activities based around it. |
