Two of Lancashire's original textile mils provide a wonderful educational resource for your class.
Discover Higher Mill built in 1789 where the magnificent 6m diameter water wheel still turns. The upper floor houses an important collection of early machinery charting the progress of woollen cloth manufacturing from domestic to industrial production.
Whittaker's mill rebuilt c1860 fllowing a major fire was a waste cotton spinning mill for over 50 years. The first floor preserves the full atmosphere of a carding and mule spinning room. Regular working demonstrations reveal the complexity of textile processes and give an impression of the working conditions.
To further fire the imagination our new hands- on gallery Revolution! explores the impact of the mechanisation of the Lancashire cotton industry on peoples lives.

Sessions

Revolution!, the new permanent exhibition gallery is the catalyst for the redevelopment of school sessions and the introduction of many new ones over the next twelve months.
New workshops will include art and the science of colour, fibre/ fabric identification and textile printing. These new sessions will compliment and add to the existing range of hands-on workshops. New role-play and interactive sessions will be introduced using the Revolution! gallery as a starting point.
